CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIESIn The Prep School

At Sherfield School, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Our Prep co-curricular programme offers a rich and diverse range of activities that allow children to explore passions, build new skills and grow in confidence.

In Junior Prep, pupils enjoy daily opportunities such as Music & Movement, Craft, Sustainability, Multisports and Live WorldWise, as well as optional specialist clubs including ballet, fencing, tennis, football and art.

In Senior Prep, the experience becomes even more exciting. Pupils can access:

  • A wide range of after-school clubs
  • Specialist sports coaching and competitive fixtures
  • Music, drama and arts enrichment
  • The innovative Prep Pathway Programme, where pupils pursue ambitious projects like CodeX, Modern Pentathlon, Sherfield Catwalk or the Food Festival, culminating in a showcase event for families and the wider school community

The Pathway Programme

Developing a thriving enrichment programme is essential for our young people of today. We believe these extracurricular skills promote employability and academic attainment and teach students the skills to make good, informed choices.

Our pathway programme develops the “soft skills” that employers and universities look for while also giving students the opportunity to discover their interests and passions.

The Pathway Programme begins in Year 5 and nurtures talents in two chosen areas. The five pathways include:
Performing Arts
  • Develop skills in dance, drama, and music, create short dramas, and pursue the LAMDA Award.
Maths and Coding
  • Learn industry-based coding, engage in computing challenges, and create a code-breaking escape room.
Sherfield Farm
  • Focus on animal care and welfare, explore the therapeutic role of animals, and propose animal integration plans to the senior leadership team.
Language and Literature
  • Work with authors to publish work, learn a new language, and create a bilingual book.
Art and Design
  • Combine art and design, understand their marketing role, conduct market research, and aim for the Arts Award.

Pathway Learning

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning is integral, with extensive use of the school grounds.

  • In Year 1, for example, in the Summer Term, children learn about farming and the importance of growing vegetables in their own allotment.
  • In Year 2, children explore geographical features, create maps, and learn about plants and habitats in science.
  • In Year 3, activities include learning about fossils, growing plants in science, and orienteering for team building and communication development.
  • In Year 4, outdoor learning links to science and orienteering, with additional activities integrated into many lessons. Children recreate a river outside while learning about the River Nile, using the school's extensive grounds.
  • In Years 5 and 6, outdoor learning emphasises team building and relationships. Additional outdoor activities are integrated into various lessons, particularly in science, when studying habitats using the school's extensive grounds and resident animals.
Specialist Teaching and Educational Visits
  • In Year 1, specialist teaching is integrated when appropriate, with most subjects taught by the class teacher. Musical performances and weekly swimming lessons are part of the co-curricular activity programme. Educational visits include trips to Basingstoke Library, a pantomime, Milestones, a local history walk, a farm, and a solar farm.
  • In Year 2, specialist teaching is embedded within lessons, with most subjects taught by the class teacher. The co-curricular curriculum includes musical performances, a December performance, and weekly swimming lessons. Educational visits include a pantomime, a castle visit, a trip to the Watercress Line, and a local walk.
  • Specialist teaching starts in Year 3, with weekly lessons in languages, music, PE and Games, drama, art, and design technology in Years 3 and 4.
  • In Years 3 to 6, children also participate in weekly swimming lessons to work towards the Learn to Swim award and have an afternoon dedicated to games on top of a weekly PE lesson.
  • In Year 3, education visits include a pantomime at the Anvil and Butser Farm to understand ancient settlements, the Roald Dahl Museum to bring Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to life, and Highclere Castle to explore Ancient Egyptian artefacts.
  • In Year 4 to Year 6, children participate in the "Listen to Me" programme, learning to play an instrument for a term.
  • In Year 4, educational visits include a pantomime at the Anvil and Winchester City Museum with the 878 AD experience for an Anglo-Saxon exploration. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford for a Greek-inspired workshop. Highclere Castle to explore Ancient Egyptian artefacts.

Sports

We believe in our pupils' holistic development, and games and physical education (PE) play a pivotal role in achieving this goal.

We offer a wide range of activities, including athletics, gymnastics, swimming, and team sports like football, rugby, basketball, and netball. Our dedicated PE staff ensures that each student receives personalised attention to enhance their skills and confidence in physical activities.

Sherfield School boasts state-of-the-art facilities for various sports and games, providing our students with ample opportunities to explore and excel. Our expansive grounds accommodate multiple outdoor sports, while our indoor facilities cater to activities like badminton and basketball.

All pupils in our Junior Prep and Senior Prep participate in weekly swim lessons and enjoy weekly PE lessons from specialised teachers.

From Year 3, pupils also participate in weekly games afternoon. Participation in interschool competitions and local tournaments is encouraged across all sports and age groups from Year 3. These events provide a platform for our students to showcase their talents and instil values of resilience, dedication, and teamwork.
